The Korean convenience store

It's not a shop.
It's a kitchen, a bank, a bar.편의점 사용 설명서

There's one every 100 metres and it does more than your hotel: cooks your ramen, tops up your transit card, takes your foreign card at the ATM, and sells the snacks everyone posts about. Here's how locals use it.

1. How it works이렇게 쓰는 거예요

The ramen machine

Buy a bowl ramen (용기면), take it to the hot-water machine, fill to the inside line, wait 3–4 minutes, eat at the table by the window. Some stores have a dedicated cooking machine: put the pot on, press the time, done. Throw the leftover broth in the sink by the machine, not the bin.

🔥
Microwave is self-service, but ask once

Lunch boxes, kimbap and hot bars go in the microwave next to the counter. The time is printed on the lid (전자레인지 1분 30초). Say "데워 주세요" (please heat it) and staff will do it for you the first time.

🟰
1+1 and 2+1 are real

The yellow tag means buy one, get one free (1+1) or buy two, get a third (2+1). It has to be the same product, and the free one is taken at the till, not the shelf. Drinks and snacks rotate monthly; it's how locals buy iced coffee.

💳
T-money lives here

Buy the card (₩2,500~) and top it up at the counter with cash: "만 원 충전해 주세요". You can also pay for anything in the store by tapping the T-money card itself. Refund the balance here before your flight.

🏧
The ATM takes foreign cards

Look for a "Global ATM" sticker; most GS25 and many CU have one. Visa and Mastercard work, fees are a few thousand won, and it's cheaper than the airport exchange counter. Choose "Foreign card" on the screen for English.

🍺
Alcohol and cigarettes

Beer, soju and wine are on the shelf and sold any hour to adults (19+); staff may ask for ID, so carry your passport photo. Cigarettes are behind the counter; point. Drinking outside on the store's bench is normal and legal.

♻️
Sort your trash

Bins at the table are split: general (일반), plastic (플라스틱), cans (캔). Pour liquid out first. Nobody will scold you, but everyone notices.

2. What's actually worth buying베스티 픽 20

Prices are typical in October 2026 and change with the 1+1 cycle. Own-brand items (CU's 연세우유 bread, GS25's 혜자 lunch boxes) are exclusive to that chain.

3. Local hacks이건 한국 사람만 알아요

The ice cup trick

Buy a cup of ice (얼음컵, ₩500~) and a pouch drink (파우치) from the fridge next to it. Pour the pouch over the ice. That's how Korea drinks iced coffee for ₩2,000 instead of ₩5,000 at a café.

Ramen, upgraded

Bowl ramen + a slice of cheese (치즈) from the fridge + a triangle kimbap on the side. Add the cheese at the end. This is a legitimate midnight meal, not a sad one.

Hangover kit

After soju: 헛개수 (hovenia tea, the tall bottle), a 컨디션 shot before drinking, and 황태해장국 cup soup after. Locals buy all three in one trip.

Hangang delivery

At the river parks, the store by the water has the ramen machine with the best view in Seoul. Buy the bowl, cook it there, sit on the steps. Picnic mats are rented at the same counter.

Rainy day

Every store sells clear umbrellas (₩5,000~) and single-use ponchos. In summer, the fridge has cooling patches and the counter has sunscreen sticks.

Lost or late

Stores are the safest place to wait for a taxi at 3am, have a toilet you can ask for ("화장실 좀 쓸 수 있어요?"), and staff will call 1330 for you if you're stuck.
